Now 1st off this is one of my favorite podcasts listened to at least 100 episode, no exaggeration. So big Love to David Senra for his dedication, and contribution to our society and constantly providing insight and inspiration. Also i never seen the documentary before this episode, but ive heard of it. but this term Shokunin popped up and i felt like this applies so accuratly to my life and how i been moving since i decided to do this art lifestyle since a kid. hears the ai consolidation of the term:
The Japanese term for artisan is Shokunin (職人). While it can be translated as "craftsman" or "artisan," it encompasses a deeper meaning of dedication, pride, and a lifelong pursuit of mastery within a craft. A blog post explains that it's not just about technical skills, but also a social obligation to do one's best and constantly improve.
Here's a more detailed explanation:
Shokunin is not just about having technical abilities. It signifies a deep commitment to one's craft, a strong work ethic, and a relentless pursuit of perfection.
The term is often associated with traditional Japanese crafts like carpentry, pottery, and bonsai.
Shokunin also implies a social responsibility to use their skills for the betterment of society and to pass down their knowledge to future generations.
The famous sushi chef Jiro Ono, featured in the documentary "Jiro Dreams of Sushi," is often cited as an example of a true Shokunin, dedicated to his craft and constantly striving for improvement
But when David Senra mentioned the simplifcation of the parts and dedication to perfecting each one, made me think about what rick rubin talks about. one time i heard something from him in a book or interview, where he says production by Reduction. bumboclat. i love that so much. and it was a reminder to focus on what im most drawn to and let that work be my signature more than the brand name. so the brand name/ logo whatever will be distilled, essence reflection of that dedication. but listen for yourself. this is an especially powerful episode.
